Hello,
Pain may not necessarily occur due to bilging disc but
nerve compression. The displaced disc may cause narrowing of the nerve passageways. Certain lifestyle changes effectively reduce discomfort and pain. If
obese your wife should lose weight, take home made nutritious balanced diet. if diabetic she should control blood sugar level at all cost. Get her clinically examined by a neurosurgeon so that the pathology is detected and treatment started at the earliest.
She can take anti- inflammatory medicines and include anti inflammatory food in her regular diet. Epidural
steroid injections can be recommended depending on the severity of the symptoms and the diagnosis made after investigations like CT/MRI, etc.
Physical therapy, hot and cold compression,
massage therapy, and exercises under a Physical therapist are helpful. If the patient does not respond to the treatments given then surgery can be recommended by the treating Neurosurgeon.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
