Suggest Treatment For Severe Hives All Over The Body

my son had a stomach virus and now that he is over it (so I think).....he has hives (welts) all over his body. What could be causing this? Any over counter meds available to treat it? As a single mom, I ve already been to the doctor and would like to do all I can before having to go again. There is so much info on the internet, just seeking some help here.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi there,

Hives can be a response to many things, most common of all allergy triggers, but it can also be triggered in response to a viral infection, the way your son has. Common antihistamines like cetirizine or loratadine will help (only if he is above 2 years of age, antihistamines are not advisable for younger children). If you prefer something more sedative in the night to help him sleep, chlorpheniramine is a good choice.

Some people find that calamine lotion soothes it enough on its own to not need antihistamines, which is something you might want to try. Minimise friction against the skin, let him wear loose comfortable clothing to avoid triggering the hives. Keep him cool, and avoid hot showers - try cool or tepid water to calm down the itch.

It should run its course in a few days, and it is unlikely that he will need to get to the doctor's unless it doesn't resolve in a week or two.

Hope this helps, and all the best to you.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
