Suggest Treatment For Severe Hair Loss

The last few yrs I have been on Levothyroxine 100 mcg with very low thyroid lab test results every 3 to 6 mos. My last TSH results were 0.09 on 6-30-16 & have been at that level quite awhile now. My hair is quite thin & have been using Cerafill retaliate shampoo, conditioner & minoxidil drops for a few years also. It has helped somewhat but lately my hair has been really falling out to the point where I have to use a hair fiber powder to fill in my thinning areas. Get very tired mid morning & hate that feeling can t seem to shake it. I m 62 yrs old & was diagnosed with Lupus about 20 yrs ago. No real problems at this time. Also have Reynauds and my fingernail cuticles are getting smaller & smaller. I have have yrly Appts with my Reumotologist. My main concern is my thinning hair. Do I Need to be taking any vitamins that could help. Appreciate any feedback that could help, thank you.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Well, effective treatments for some types of hair loss are available. But some hair loss is permanent. If your hair loss is caused by an underlying disease, treatment for that disease will be necessary.

This may include drugs to reduce inflammation and suppress your immune system, such as prednisone.

But also, 2 medications are used for treatment and include minoxidil and Finasteride. If there is no success with these then hair transplant or restoration surgery can make the most of the hair you have left.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
