Suggest Treatment For Severe HSV-1 Outbreak

I am having a really bad HSV-1 outbreak right now. My whole lip has swelled up on my left side. I am also feeling tenderness and tingling in my nose as well as my right eye. I am also feeling a headache on my right side. Should I be concerned? I am taking Acyclovir-800mg tabs 5xday and it has not seemed to help.

Hello,

I can understand your concern for the herpes outbreak. You have not mentioned in your query that whether this outbreak occurred for the first time or is a recurrent episode.

If it is a first episode ten it is quite usual to get swelling of lip with fever and other systemic symptoms of tenderness and tingling in nose as well as right eye.

You are taking correct medicine as Acyclovir-800mg tabs 5xday is the drug of choice for the same.

In my patients I suggest them to take a plane paracetamol for two times per day to reduce the pain and tenderness.

If at all you feel increase in symptoms then you should consult your treating doctor for further guidance.

Get well soon.

Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic

Judging from the distribution of the rash and the treatment prescribed I will rather keep a possibility of Herpes Zoster Or shingles.
Shingles Or Herpes Zoster is caused by a different virus i.e Varicella Zoster Virus (Vzv) rather than Herpes Simplex Virus (Hsv 1).
Shingles usually involves one half of the face with pain and fluid filled lesions along the distribution of branches of the trigeminal nerve.
You are on the right treatment for Shingles and would suggest that you continue with it.
Topically you may use an OTC antibacterial e.g 2% mupirocin ointment, twice daily so as to prevent secondary bacterial infection.
Shingles is a painful condition, therefore, an OTC painkiller e.g Ibuprofen twice or twice daily will help you symptomatically with the pain
