Suggest Treatment For Selective Mutism In A Child

I have a 12 year old female with selective mutism. She presents in office with her hair covering her face and no response. She has several older female siblings and she talks and interacts at home with them. Mother added at times she speaks so fast her words run into each other and its sounds like another language. This is my first experience with it. What is a true diagnosis and how do I treat it.

Selective mutism usually co-exists with shyness or social anxiety. Children with selective mutism stay silent even when the consequences of their silence include shame, social ostracism or even punishment.

Please understand your child. How many times you noticed her given behavior in your office? How did the people at your office behave with her? Do she have any unusual / strange memories about your office? All these adds together. She will behave properly when she finds the atmosphere is conducive. Give your child little time to adjust. You may consult a psychologist for treatment later. Don't worry.
