Suggest Treatment For Post-polio Syndrome

Hello Doctor.... I contracted Polio when I was 1 year old on my right leg. But after about 2 years I recovered completely though the right leg was weak. For the next 26 years I had absolutely no problem in leading a normal life until last year I started with difficulty breathing, indigestion, weakness in muscles. After a year of on-going diagnosis with cardiac, pulmonary the doctor concluded that it might be PPS after a muscle biopsy was performed (uploaded report). I am suffering a lot of breathlessness and poor quality sleep due to the same. Please help me in what could be better ways/treatment to take care of this situation.

Hi,

See both polio and its late complication known as post polio syndrome (PPS) can be treated very well with physiotherapy treatment. Difficulty in breathing is mainly due to weak respiratory muscles which may lead to pulmonary and cardiac events. I suggest you go for various strength training exercises under the supervision of an expert cardiopulmonary physiotherapist due to which your strength will not be decrease.

It's common after a certain period of time. It happens to somebody and not to someone. it varies from person to person. I insist you avoid non-veg food, alcohol, tobacco, and even pre-cooked food. Consume more of green leafy vegetables and lots of protein and fiber contained in food.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
