Hi Tara,

I would like to explain to you what causes PCOS and what can be done for it. The brain produces signals that order the female body to make female sex hormones. Little amount of male sex hormones are also produced in female body. Due to these hormones, the ovary (alternate ovary every month) makes egg every month. These eggs either get fertilized during sexual intercourse or gets sloughed off in menstruation. Now in PCOS, there is imbalance between the signals produced by the brain and the amount of hormones produced in the body. This causes irregularities in egg formation and so irregularities in menstruation. It does not cause vaginal cancer so you do not need to worry about that.

However, if you are getting menstruation just about once a year, it is mandatory that you visit a gynecologist. You will have to get blood tests to determine level of sex hormones in your blood and may have to go for ultrasonography (USG) to ascertain cysts in ovaries and ovulation process. Based on the results, you will be given hormonal therapy that will regulate hormonal levels in your body and will make your menstrual cycles regular.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Take care.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
