Suggest Treatment For Persistent Flatulence In An Elderly Person

I am 81 years old and in good health but I have a serious gas problem. I have not varied my diet for years abnd lately I am having times of passing gas 50 or more times a day. I take various medicines for my various medical conditions. I am wondering if one of these medicines can be causing this gas problem. If this is possible, how can I check these medicines to see if they could be the problem. I have talked to my primary doctor and he says change your diet . My email address is YYYY@YYYY . Thanks. Don

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The issue sounds to be alteration with gut motility most likely. There can be various reasons as
- drug induced (blood thinners and cholesterol-lowering agents are main culprits)
- sluggish peristalsis
- inadequate or lack of physical exercises
- excess weight
- dietary factors
- other intestine and colon problems.

Treatment depends upon the cause, but in general, I can suggest
- Drink more liquids.
- Dietary measures to avoid spices, junk foods, dairy fat.
- Keep blood sugar, cholesterol, body weight under control.
- Avoid smoking, alcohol if consuming.
- Regular walk, jog, exercise, swim as per the choice and ability.

Get colonoscopy done if not in the recent past for further management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel,
