Suggest Treatment For Persistent Cough

My mom has been coughing for about two months now. The doctor gave her steriods and cough medicine but the problem is still persisting. It is at its worse at night but it seems to be getting worse during the day as well. She is still taking the cough medicine at night but she ran out of steriods. This problem is causing lack of sleep and making her tired and drowsy during the day. She did have a cold before she got this problem but the cold went away and the cough stayed. She was taking blood preassure medicine and the doctor said this caused her to cough and gave her medicine to make her stop coughing. But she is still coughing. Please help. Shes been to the doctor about 2 or 3 times and its not getting any better. So any advice would be great.

Pulmonologist 's  Response
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Hypertensive drug like enalapril can cause dry coughing. So if she is taking enalapril then we have to replace enalapril by other antihypertensive drug.
Another possibility is bronchitis.
Bronchitis is inflammation of airways and it is common after viral upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) like cold.
So consult pulmonologist and get done clinical examination of respiratory system and PFT (Pulmonary Function Test).
PFT will not only diagnose bronchitis but it will also tell you about severity of the disease and treatment is based on severity only.
She will mostly improve with inhaled bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroid.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your mother. Thanks.
