Shall I Continue With Sandoz-clarification In Spite Of Muscle Cramps?

I just started two days ago on a prescription of sandoz-clarification to treat a bronchial infection which was made worse by my asthma symptoms. I have been taking one tablet a day twice a day as prescribed by my doctor. The dosage has considerably cleared up my asthma and infection symptoms (no longer coughing up yellow sputum), however I have had many really bad muscle cramps (mostly in my calf and leg muscles) since i started taking the medication two days ago. My question is should I continue to take the medication until it is gone as suggested? (the muscle cramps are really painful and i get one every few hours) The fact sheet that I read for the medication says to contact doctor if muscle cramps occur however my doctor just went on vacation. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Muscle cramps are a known side effect of clarithromycin, which is the active ingredient in Sandoz-clarithromycin. If the muscle cramps are severe and interfering with your daily activities, it would be best to consult another doctor or seek medical advice from a pharmacist. It may be necessary to discontinue the medication and switch to a different treatment.

However, if the muscle cramps are mild to moderate and tolerable, you may want to continue taking the medication as prescribed and try to alleviate the symptoms by stretching, staying hydrated, and avoiding strenuous activities. If you decide to continue taking the medication, be sure to monitor your symptoms and contact your doctor as soon as possible if they worsen or do not improve.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
