Suggest Treatment For Pericarditis

I have been diagnosed with pericarditis about month ago and taking pretizone to control it.I normally workout 5 times a week-mostly cardio and some lighter weights but have done nothing but some walking and I am concerned about the weight gain and muscle loss.Is there anything I can do besides trying to find a diet?I am 62 years old and have been healthy all my life and still active in sports.

Hello,

Treatment of pericarditis depends on the factor causing the symptoms. It is commonly treated with pain relievers like Aspirin and Ibuprofen but you may need antibiotics or anti-fungals in case of bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic pericarditis. It is important to know the cause of pericarditis so that you can get specific treatment. If the symptoms do not subside your treating doctor may consider giving colchicine.

Get it treated at the earliest, left untreated it may complicate to constrictive pericarditis and hence, you may need water pills. Sometimes, when complicated, it can only be treated with procedures or surgery, pericardiocentesis or pericardiectomy. Exercises are good for the heart but not when the pericardium is inflamed. You can do low intensity exercise or walking. Cardio exercises are not recommended for it may trigger the symptoms according to research.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
