Suggest Treatment For Pain And Discharge From Ear

My inner ear feels sore and feels kind of blocked. I cleaned it this morning and the cotton bud came out reddish and smelly. Do I need to see a doctor or can ear drops help? I seem to always have ear problem around winter too. Last year, it was worse cos I went to see a specialist and he said both my ear had a tiny weenie hole and so ear infection. It was cleaned and then examined and then I was put on medication and ear drops for a week. I have ear problem all my life and had gromets when I was just a kid. Please advise on what I need to do next?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that you have a chronic ear infection that has flared up leading to soreness, blockage in ear along with smelly discharge..
At times long standing ear infection can lead to perforation of ear drum that you already described of having a tiny hole..
In case if the infection does not resolve or keeps persisting there is a possibility that the perforation will not heal and even can keep increasing leading to loss of hearing.
Therefore should be taken care of..
I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and he can do a thorough clinical evaluation and also advise you investigations like Otoscopy of ear..He can advise you to take a course of antibiotics like Augmentin, anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen, decongestants oral as well as nasal spray..
You can also be advised to put antibiotic ear drops..
You should also limit water exposure to the ear..
You should avoid picking the ear and trying to pop the ears to unclog as it can cause further injury to eardrum..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
