Suggest Treatment For Myoclonus Activity In A 9 Years Old

Our daughter is almost 9 years old and wakes up at night, about 1-2 hours after easily falling asleep, with myoclonic activity. She s had a complete blood work up and CT and were all normal. Day time EEG was normal as well. The myoclonus involves her upper extremities, trunk and sometimes her neck. The jerks occur after she has fully fallen to sleep and occur 2-5 times per minute. She wakes up on occasion but usually stays sleeping, changing her position occasionally. The problem is that is she is very tired during the day and it is effecting her outlook on life. she wakes up tired even though she s had 10-12 hours of sleep at night. There s been talk of possibly doing a sleep study. Anything else we should consider?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Myoclonus in sleep is common in children. We call it as benign sleep myoclonus, which usually does not require any treatment. But your child has some odd features like sleep disturbances, multiple episodes and drowsiness during the day time. As she has myoclonus only during sleep, it is better to get a sleep video EEG, which can give us lot of clues. For Myoclonic seizures, medicines like Sodium valproate or Levetiracetam works well. I would suggest you to do a repeat sleep video EEG and get a pediatric neurologist opinion regarding medications and doses.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
