Hello,

From the complaint you are describing, it seems like your mother is suffering from knee joint arthritis.

I can explain the situation in simple terms this way: our knee joint is a hinge type of joint, like the hinges on the door. The thigh bone and the leg bones join with each other here through knee joint. There is a lubrication cushion like disc present in the joint that prevents friction in the bones during movents. When this disc degenerates or is damaged, area of the knee joint feels friction while movement of leg bones. This friction causes pain.

This condition is usually attributed aging. In addition, postmenopausal women are affected more as female sex hormones protect against such degeneration and after menopause, secretion of these hormones decrease.

While ascending and descending stairs, the joint feels more friction because the knee needs to bend more and so more friction in the joint area. In the initial stage of this arthritis, pain is felt only while bending knee at more acute angles. As the degeneration progresses, pain intensity increases and more simpler movements can become painful.

To confirm the diagnosis, you can consult an orthopaedic surgeon and he can take an x-ray and confirm the degeneration.

In initial phases, analgesics available over the counter, physiotherapy and calcium and vitamin supplements can help. However, when simpler movements are painful and day-to-day routine feels debilitated, one should go for knee replacement surgery.

I hope this information is useful to you. Thank you for choosing HealthCareMagic. I wish your mother good health.

Best regards,
Dr. Viraj Shah
