Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had a dime sized lipoma for over two years. A few days ago it started becoming enflamed and painful and looked like it was blistering. After having it drained today, the nurse practitioner thinks it could be staph. Can a lipoma turn into staph or worse, MRSA?
Dear- thanks for use our HCM system for your medical questions. Lipoma is a benign fatty tumor that grows between the skin and the muscle. However, it can become infected and create problems as an abscess which will need surgical drainage and antibiotics. MRSA is a bacteria that is in the skin and can infect the opening area of the lipoma. It is not that the lipoma will turn into staph or MRSA, it is that it can be infected by this bacteria and require an aggressive antibiotic treatment. I hope my answer will clarify your concerns. Feel free to ask any medical questions that you might need. Dr.Sara
