Suggest Treatment For Hives And Itchy Skin On Back And Chest Area

I have had hives and itchy skin over most of my body chronically for about a year. Main areas are back, chest, abdomen, extremities, and sides. Have been treating with otc anti-itch lotions and otc antihistamines. Extremes of hot and cold seem to aggravate it. Keeps recurring. Any suggestions?

Hello,

Thank you for asking at HCM.

I went through your history and would like to know more about you like your age, any allergies, any other medical conditions, any other medicines you might be taking, type of skin (dry/sweaty), diet, stress factors, any digestive complaints, any seasonal variations, day-night variations, etc etc. These details would help me to know your complaints better.

However, at present, from your given details, I would like to make suggestions from you as follows:

1. As you have hives for around a year, I would suggest you basic investigations like complete blood counts, ESR, CRP, serum proteins, serum SGPT, serum creatinine, serum total IgE, serum ANA, urine and stool examination, thyroid testing, etc.

However, please note that detailed of your symptoms are very much required before suggesting investigations. There are many possible causes for hives and sometimes even investigations may not be able to identify any cause.

2. For control of symptoms, I would suggest you an antihistamine like cetirizine or levocetirizine regularly for at least 2-3 months.

3. I would also suggest you regular application of calamine lotion or moisturizing cream/lotion, especially immediately after bathing twice a day.

4. I usually also suggest my patients to take vitamin D supplements, which may help.

5. Please have plenty of fluids during day to maintain hydration. Please minimize consumption of too hot/spicy foods as well as packed foods which may contain preservatives/coloring agents/flavoring agents, etc.

6. Please try to avoid extremes of temperatures and tight fitting clothes. In my opinion, loose fitting cotton clothes are best suited to most patients with hives.

7. Further suggestions can be provided after detailed information only.

Hope above suggestions will be helpful to you.

Should you have any further query, please feel free to ask at HCM.

Wish you the best of the health ahead.

Thank you & Regards.
