Hello there,
Your blood sugar level being 536 is very high and warrants urgent attention by a diabetologist. In most probability you need to be started on insulin injection at least for the time being. There is nothing to panic. Till then keep drinking lots of water as hydration will prevent any complications such high sugars can cause acutely.
Diabetes is a lifestyle disorder in which sugars go high because of inadequate insulin production or inadequate insulin action. Metformin is a drug which helps your own body's insulin to function better. Now it would have helped to know your blood sugars at diagnosis. But clearly Metformin is not helping you and you may need insulin to tide over this acute phase and probably add oral agents gradually later.
When sugars are uncontrolled in the long run could damage your eyes, kidney and nerves and even increase your risk for heart diseases. So keeping sugars under control is the best way to prevent complications. Reduce carbohydrate content of your meals and stop all sugars and sweets.
Try to include exercise in your daily routine as this helps to reduce blood sugars but this needs that your heart is in a good condition.
As of now visit your diabetologist on an urgent basis.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
