Suggest Treatment For Gynecomastia

I am seventy-one, male, who exercises regurally, (riding a bike am most every day for 6 miles, and lifting weights two to three times a week.) I have gynecomastia and was wondering if there is anything I can do to change this. My weight is 172. I have had bypass surgery 15 years ago, and an stint inplanted 3 years ago. Otherwise I am healthly.

Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I have read your question fully and understand your concerns.

As a male grows older, the production of testosterone (which is the male hormone) reduces. Relatively he would be having a higher level of female hormone estrogen (all males produce some amount of the female hormone just like all females produce some amount of male hormone). This discrepancy in the ratio between your testosterone and estrogen is most likely is causing your gynaecomastia.

You could see your doctor to confirm that it is true gynaecomastia and not pseudogynaecomastia. In true gynaecomastia there is breast tissue underneath the areola, in pseudo gynaecomastia there is only fat. Your doctor may also run routine hormonal profile tests, including your liver and kidney function tests (kidney and liver disorders also lead to gynaecomastia)

Are you on any medication? There are some certain drugs that can lead to gynaecomastia ike finasteride, dutasteride, cimetidine, anti-retoviral therapy, chemotherappy drugs etc. In majority of cases, stopping those offending drugs reverses your gynaecomastia.

If the gynaecomastia has developed fairly recently you could try an anti-estrogen medication called Tamoxifen 10 mg twice a day for 3 months. This is a prescription only medication; hence you need to see your doctor for this.
If Tamoxifen fails, then if you wish you could consult a breast surgeon for reduction surgery.

I hope this answer has helped you.

Thank you
