Suggest Treatment For Cough And Green Mucus After A Tonsillectomy

Hi!
Is it normal to be coughing up green mucus balls after tonsillectomy? I am taking antibiotics but it seems to not get any better. I have days where I am just fine but then it turns around and I feel horrible again. It was over 1 week ago I got my tonsils removed because of pain but also because of swollowing. My tonsils were large as golf balls. After the surgery I did not get any antibiotics but only painkillers (which to be honest do not take the pain away at all). It was when I went to the hospital because I was unable to breathe the doctor gave me antibiotics but also told me that I have an ear infection. I take 3 1g of antibiotics 3 times a day and 2 painkillers if I feel like my throat hurts. I have a hard time sleeping and get only around 5 hours of sleep per night and when I wake up my throat would be very dry and my nose would be clogged up. What should I do?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain coughing up green mucous balls is an indication of infection..
It can occur due to infection in throat that can be due to infection post tonsillectomy as you were not given antibiotics..

Other causes for green mucous and clogged nostrils can be upper respiratory tract infection, sinusitis, lung infection etc..

I would suggest you to consult an ENT expert and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like PNS view x ray of sinuses, sputum culture, chest x ray etc can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

Along with antibiotics you can also be advised antihistamines like Levocetrizine, mucolytics like Ambroxol, decongestants like Phenylephrine and nasal saline irrigation and steam inhalations..
Doing warm saline gargles can also help..
Avoid spicy and chilled foods..
Prefer drinking warm water and other warm liquids as it eases drainage of mucous..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
