Suggest Treatment For Chronic Insomnia

Good morning, i have had chronic insomnia for years now. Even Xanax doesnt help much. I dont smoke, drink little alcohol , take regular exercise, read before sleep, swith off my devices, use herbs and herbal teas but nothing seems to work. I alo use meditaion and minfullness apps and listen to soothing sounds and music. I have reaearched extensively-also using EFT tapping . The curious thing is that it is sporadic; most of the time I sleep normally, but when insomnia strikes it it a formidable foe. I also have green stool ocasionally and this is something that has only occurd in the last few years, maybe 3 or 4 4times a year. I would welcome any specialist advice that you can give, as this is incredibly debilitating and robs life of all joy. Regards , David

Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
Insomnia is a disorder characterized by the inability to sleep or total absence of sleep. The best way to manage this problem is to identify the cause if any. Some common causes of insomnia include : stress, anxiety, Depresion, medications, change in environment or work schedule, poor sleeping habits, some medical conditions like illnesses, eating late in the night, caffeine, nicotine and alcohol or just aging. With all these possible causes, only an intimate chat with a Doctor can help to identify the cause and some laboratory or imaging investigations if caused by a pathologic medical condition.
Xanax will help give you sleep if your insomnia is due to anxiety or panic or depression.
The treatment of insomnia can be very difficult if the cause is not known. To identify the probable cause, you will need to see a Doctor to get your sleep history, determine your sleep-wake cycle with a special questionnaire and your level of daytime sleepiness, run blood tests including those to check thyroid problems and other problem that are associated with insomnia. If no cause is identified, tests to monitor and record a variety of body activities while you sleep like brain waves, breathing, heartbeat, eye and body movements will be needed.
Concerning the management of your problem i will advise you see a Neurologist who is an expert in sleep disorders to investigate the problem and teach you some behavioral measures to manage sleep problems like
-Education about good sleeping habits
-Cognitive behavioral therapy
-Relaxation techniques
-Stimulus control
-Sleep restriction therapy
-Light therapy
In the meantime, i will advise you try these
1. Get sleeping pills like valium at bedtime for say 5 days continuously and stop. Then observe onward. This may help bring back your sleep cycle to normal
2. Exercise and stay active always
3. Check your drugs if on any
4. Avoid or limit naps
5.Avoid or limit caffeine and alcohol and do not take nicotine
6.Stick to a sleep schedule
7.Avoid large meals and beverages at bedtime
8.Use your bedroom only for sleep or sex
9.Make your bedroom comfortable for sleep
10.Aviod trying too hard to sleep
11.Find ways to relax
12. Get out of bed when you are not sleeping.
All these measure may be difficult to practice but the more you succeed to do, the more your chances of catching will be increased.
Hope my answer will help you
Best regards
