Hi, Cholesteatoma is an abnormal, non-cancerous skin growth that develops in the middle section of the ear, behind the eardrum. It can cause hearing loss and is known to continue to grow in size. It is most often caused by repeated middle-ear infections. It can cause unwanted effects like deafness, meningitis, facial paralysis, and bone loss, and hence needs to be treated. Most often, such cholesteatomas are removed surgically, often through a mastoidectomy. Minor ones can be treated with professional ear cleaning and antibiotic treatment.
