Suggest Treatment For Bruise On The Knee

I have a bruise on the back of my knee. It is painful in any sideways movement. I can walk with little of=r no pain but when I lay down and tur over I get a shooting pain in that area. I do have varicose veins but they have never bothered me much if at all. I am also wondering if a blood vessel could have ruptured. What do you suggest. I am planning on contacting the VA where I receive my healthcare. I am ^5 years old. Wayne

Hi,

Painful bruise on the back of knee, varicose veins indicate one of the following causes of your symptoms:
Ruptured varicose vein as you have mentioned.
Morrant Backer's cyst that is coming from the knee joint.
Local sprain of muscles.
This can be diagnosed well by the following ways:
Consult an Orthopedic Surgeon get MRI of the knee joint and around.
Color doppler of the lower limbs to know the status of the varicose veins.
The treatment will obviously be as the per the findings.
Till then use compression bandages.
Do not strain more on the affected knee.
Backer's cyst and varicose veins will need a proper planned surgery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
