Psychiatrist 's  Response
hi.. thanks for writing.. i have understood your concerns...

your father has started drinking alcohol in the day time also, that shows that he has became dependent on it..when a person becomes dependent on alcohol, he requires more amount of it to achieve same effects, so he is drinking more and with increased frequency..also when he will stop alcohol, he might have the withdrawal symptoms...

so, even when a person understands that drinking alcohol is causing harm to him, financially, occupationally and socially, he cant leave it because of the withdrawal symptoms..

what u can do is, ask him about the problems that have arose because of his habit when he is sober..do not talk to him or shout at him when he is drunk..there is no meaning in talking to him in a drunk state..

u shud convince him to visit psychiatrist or deaddiction specialist for stopping the alcohol..there are medication available which can prevent the development of withdrawl symptoms on abstinence from the alcohol..

the treatment strategies would be:
1. motivating him to leave alcohol
2. giving knowledge about the problems with using alcohol, physical, social, financial, occupational..
3. sudden stoppage of alcohol
4. preventing the withdrawal symptoms
5. encouragement and motivation to continue the behavior
6. giving the so called anticraving drugs..

in my opinion u shud take him to psychiatrist in your locality.. u can search famous psychiatrist in your city from the internet and consult him..your father nedd to be admitted in psychiatric nursing home for deaddiction purpose..he can not be given medications on out patient basis..

i hope u ll find this advice helpful..best luck..
