Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
HI. I have a 17mo old and noticed this morning that he has a considerably large lump behind his ear on the left side. I was in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico celebrating anniversary w/o our boys this past week and just got back last night, My mother said that he started running fever yesterday and noticed the lump then as well. They also said that he has been picking at that one ear for the past couple of days. Im very considered and considering taking him to the E.R, however had a HORRIBLE experience taking him when he was 4 months old. I would much rather take him to his pediatrician first thing in the morning when they open if possible, however his safety and wellbeing is my first priority. Should i go ahead and take him or will it be ok to take him in the morning?
P.S. He is currently not running a fever or seems in any distress. He is cutting some teeth and appears to have some discomfort from that but once he is given tylenol/motrin alternated he seems ok.
Hi...by what you quote I feel that he might be having a posterior cervical adenopathy - it could be a reactive swelling or a lymph node infection due to bacteria. It requires proper clinical examination and probably antibiotic therapy as there was fever. I suggest you see your pediatrician as soon a s possible. Regards - Dr. Sumanth
