Suggest Treatment For UTI When Diagnosed With Kidney Deficiency

My mother has stage 4 kidney deficiency. I took her to urgent care on Sunday to see if she had a urinary tract infection. She had a few white blood cells, trace of blood in urine. They couldn t visualize any bacteria but sent it for a culture which will be back in a day or so. The doctor prescribed nitrofurantoin mono/mac 100 mg twice a day. My mother has stage 4 kidney deficiency and is 93 years old. She is usually prescribed Cipro or Cephalexin for a urinary tract infection which she hasn t had in a long time. ( She takes probiotics that have helped a great deal). I read that if you have severe kidney disease, not to take macrobid and I am concerned as to whether this antibiotic will hurt her kidneys. thank you (also, we live in Tucson which is dry)

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Sorry to hear of her disease. You are very right Nitrofurantoin should not be used in severe renal problems. So better not to use it. You can wait till the culture is available and then we use a safe drug among the list.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
