Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I'm a 49 year old male diagnosed with Lone Afib about 20 yrs. ago. During this period of time I've been hospitalized on average about once every 4-5 years but always converted with meds. I was on 100mg of Atenonol per day for years until my last episode about two years ago and my Cardiologist put me on 800 mg of multaq per day which is very costly. I know, we can't put a price on our health but I do not like the stated side effects that come with it although I have not experienced them. Things like, doubling your chances of death during heart failure, developing scar tissue in the lungs and hardening of the lungs not to mention liver damage. In your opinion is there a better med. out there with fewer side effects? and is it a good idea to consider an ablasion?
Dear Friend. Hi , I am Dr Anshul Varshney , I have read your query in detail , I understand your concern. Lone AF can be treated well with medical management. Treatment Strategy depends on your ECG finding. If you could attach your ECG's i can help you better. However , i can solve one of your problem. Multaq is Dronedorone , which is a new drug in market and so costly. But it has not been shown to be more effective than the old and widely used drug Amidarone in any of the standard trials. Amiodarone is very cheap as compared to Dronedarone. And has good results. So, discuss with your doctor regarding my opinion. This is my personal opinion based on details available here.
