Suggest Supplements And Vitamins For An Eighty Year Old Heathy Lady

What is the best specific prescription of medicine, suplements and treatment for an eighty-year-old person? This person feels week with difficulty to walk, but has no pain and has always been healthy. She may be a little sad. How can we know the causes and stop them? Her blood exams were ok. How can we make sure we are strengthening her physically. She eats very adequately, apparently.

I am sorry to hear about your friend.

In all my elderly patients I recommend that they take a general multivitamin with minerals daily and additional vitamin D with calcium as most elderly patients have a vitamin D deficiency. There are available vitamin D with calcium preparations and I general recommend 2000 units of vitamin D and 600mg of calcium twice daily.

To answer your question about feeling sad at times this could be early depressive disorder. If she feels sad and depressed more that 2 months with feelings of hopelessness lethargy and either eating too much too little or sleep to little or too much she could have clinical depression. For this we use low doses of antidepressants like celexa to help improve mood and motivation. I would recommend she see and talk with her doctor about her feelings of sadness to decide whether she is a candidate for medication.
