Suggest Solution To Cope With Anxiety/panic Attacks

Dear Doctors...........I need advice, I am 24 male... I have been diagnosed with anxiety / panic attacks but the doctor didnt give me advice on how to cope with them. almost everyday I think I am having a heart attack,my chest is really hurting i feel like i cant breath and I always tell myself, yeah, this time I'm really going to die. Needless to say, I never do... i keep waking up in the middle of the night feeling sick and panicy. i get out of breath most of the time..most of the times I also suffered from Nocturnal Panic attacks while sleeping... Since the last 10 months I've been having repeated symptoms of palpitations, dyspnea and uneasiness...recently I have been to a famous cardiologist ( Dr. Yash Lokhandwala) and he said I am suffering from sinus tachycardia and that is because of anxiety and panic attacks. My ECG is normal ,2D Echo is normal, resting heart rate is between 110 and 120 BPM, On examination : BP 130/90,Thyroid Stimulating Hormone : 2.09 uIU/ml,T3 : 1.27 ng/ml,T4 : 9.9 ug/dl..all my blood tests are normal..ECGs all show sinus rhythm or sinus tachycardia, QRS axis around +90 degrees, rest normal..for last few months I was on beta blockers and some anti anxiety medications but no help.. My life is becoming HELL due to this.........please help me out to get out of this..........

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi,

I went through your query and can understand the distress you must be having due to your symptoms. You seem to be suffering from panic disorder which is resulting in your having multiple panic attacks.

You should seek a psychiatric consultation so as to initiate treatment for your condition. You would benefit from one of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors like sertraline or paroxetine. In addition, initially a short course of benzodiazepines like clonazepam will help reducing you anxiety.

You should also start exercising daily. It will help you relax. Relaxation exercises in form of deep breathing an progressive muscular relaxation are also beneficial.

Hope that the information provided was helpful. Best wishes.
