Suggest Remedy For Itchy Throat With Heartburn

I am experiencing a consistent scratchy/burning irritation in my throat that is producing plem that causes me to cough frequently. On some occasions I have brought up a yellow liquid with an acidy burning taste that I believe could be bile.
I have also been experiencing a large amount of heartburn for more than 2 months. I have a Dr. Appointment coming up in 3 weeks but was wondering if there is something I can do now to relieve the symptoms other than Zantac 150 and Delsym cough syrup which I am taking daily but doesn't always provide relief.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain and presentation of symptoms it points towards Gastro-esophageal reflux disease commonly known as Acid Reflux in which acid from stomach refluxes into food pipe and throat leading to irritation and inflammation which causes heart burn as well as tickling and irritation in throat..
Coughing is due to throat irritation and acidic taste in mouth is due to the taste of acid that is coming into mouth..
You should get an Endoscopy done under consultation of Gastroenterologist for confirmation..
As of now to relieve the symptoms you can take Proton pump inhibitors like Omeprazole or Pantoprazole which are much more effective in case of heart burn as compared to H2 blockers like Zantac[ranitidine].
Take antacid like Milk of magnesia or Calcium carbonate.
Drink plenty of water, avoid spicy, acidic and large meals..
Take frequent small meals like eating every 2 hours.
Take short walk after meals and finish your dinner atleast 2 hours before sleeping..
If you are obese loose some weight..
While sleeping you should keep your head and chest portion slightly raised as compared to feet to reduce the acid from coming up..
If you sleep laterally prefer left lateral position..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..

Hi Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern.

According to your symptoms you might be suffering from GERD ( gastro esophageal reflux syndrome). In this disease gastric contents are refluxed back in throat through esophagus (food pipe) causing acidic taste and irritation of throat.
GERD is usually caused by relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter, which keeps the top of the stomach closed & gastric contents are refluxed in throat.Treatment consist of
1.lifestyle changes - Don't lie immediately after having meals, Taking a slow walk may be helpful. Heavy diet should be avoided at a time, instead of divided 4-5 meals should be taken.
2.Proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole / pantoprazole should be taken empty stomach in morning. Surgery may be an option in those who do not improve.

Consult a gastro-enterologist if problem persists
Hope your query is solved
