Ophthalmologist 's  Response
Hi, I am Dr. Richa. I am an ophthalmologist. Sudden appearance of flashes of light are suggestive of weakening in Retina. This weakness irritates the nerve which lead to sparkling sensation.Floaters or dark spots can be because of many reasons, for example opacity in the jelly of eye , or blood in the retina. You do not need to worry, not all the causes and weakening require treatment. Most of the time, only observation is required. But a detailed examination of periphery of retina is required to find the root cause. Are you a diabetic or a patient of blood pressure or do u have high minus power? I would advise you to consult an ophthalmologist and go for a detailed retinal examination.Floaters are very common but sometimes can be because of above mentioned causes. Usually, patients learn to avoid these floaters with time. Thanks , Take care.

Ophthalmologist Dr. Richa Sharma's  Response
Hi, I am Dr. Richa. Flashes and floaters can be because of a lot of reasons. Most of them lead to weakening of retina and causes irritation of nerve. All flashes and floaters require a detailed examination of retina once to find out the cause. Are you a diabetic. hypertensive or have a high minus power of glasses? You have mentioned that you are otherwise perfectly fine, but I would recommend you to undergo Retina examination so as to avoid any future complications. Most of the time, observation and timely check ups are required. If required, weekening can be sealed with lasers. As far as floaters are concerned, sometimes, they disappear with time or patients learn to avoid them. Take care. Thanks
