Noted the history about a retired nurse of 45 years of age, had a rectocele for many years, developed diarrhea about a month ago and have no normal bowel movements, tried Miralax, fiber bars, activa and cereal - only dulcolax helps but it gives diarrhea, have sensitive stomach, wants to know what to do. As per the history you have provided, this looks to be abuse of the medicines as you have started using everything causing changed response of the intestines . I would advise you the following in such a situation: Stop all the medications. make a list of the foods and beverages that suit your intestines and to make another of causing problems and to stop all the foods and beverages that cause, instigate or enhance the problems. This alone may be sufficient. Send stool for tests for three consecutive days . Tests of blood for CBC, thyroid functions, liver and kidney functions. Ultrasonography of the whole abdomen and CT scan if in doubts. Clinical evaluation, examination and correlation with tests should get you hte correct diagnosis and gives you a plan for further management. Colonoscopy and an opinion of a Gastroenterologist helps if required.
