Suggest Remedy For Anxiety And Hypocondriasis

My husband has what I believe to be a nervous breakdown. He is crying/ focusing obsessively on medical conditions that do not exist and he has been to the er, doctors, dental and eye drs. in the past 4 weeks. he is currently unemployed and does not have a car. My husband is dangerously falling apart before my eyes. He is not able to focus or do anything right now. He believes he has cancer and any medical condition. He does not have health insurance; he was put on Paxil 40mg that has now been increased to 80mg per day. I believe it is going to take a major intervention to get him on track. My questions is - should I get him hospitalized to be evaluated? If things continue as they are, I believe he will commit suicide.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. The symptoms like visiting doctors for trivial issues, focussing obsessively on medical conditions, nervous breakdown etc show severe health anxiety and hypochondriasis. He is unable to focus on anything, has fear that he has cancer etc. These symptoms need proper medical attention. He has been put on Paroxetine 40 and then on 80 mg and the drug would help to improve his symptoms related to obsessive thinking and anxiety. As with increased doses his symptoms are persisting so in my opinion he should be shown to a psychiatrist immediately. In very severe anxiety ECT can help in improvement. Good sedation and hospitalisation along with Behaviour therapy will reduce his anxiety. Reassurance also helps a lot in such conditions.

Take him to a psychiatrist for treatment.

Thanks, Take care.
