Suggest Remedies For Swelling And Pain In Broken Arm

Hello Doctor. I am writing on behalf of my friend who was involved in a motor vehicle accident. He suffered a broken arm and has had surgery. He is now fitted with a cast. He is suffering from swelling and sever pain and is finding it difficult to sleep. Can you recommend a position on how to elevate his arm and reduce the pain. He is 34 years old, 82kgs, 5 6 height and has a heart murmur from birth (he confirms this is no issue) . Hope you can assist. Hear from you shortly. Many thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since his arm with the cast is sore, he should take a pillow bigger in size than the normal pillows and lie slightly on his left side so that he can keep his head on the end side of the pillow and his broken arm with the cast on the pillow so that it is a little elevated and comfortable. He can sleep on his back and gently keep the arm with the cast on top of him.

He can lay on his right side and put a smaller pillow below/underneath so that he can rest the affected arm with the cast on the smaller pillow comfortably. Be gentle with yourself as the healing may take some time. Take the pain relieving medicines. In case you are feeling very uncomfortable, get a follow-up clinical examination done.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
