Suggest Remedies For Sore Throat And Halitosis

15 year old daughter, sore throat. White stuff in the tonsils. Since September the Dr.s have been treating her for Streap throat- 5 times. Today we went to emerg- yet again, and the swab came back - not strep. They looked back on previous swabs done on her, and they all were negative for strep. Today they are saying its viral, rinse with salt water, and thats it. She has a horrible smell in her breath, what else can be done?

Hi,thank you for posting your query on health care magic.

I can understand your concern.

White spots on the tonsils can be due to following reasons along with bacterial Streptococcal infection.

Candidiasis-White spots on throat, a burning sensation in the mouth, and difficulty swallowing are common symptoms associated with this disease caused by the yeast infection. This infection can be treated with an antifungal prescription

Infectious Mononucleosis- it is viral infection, mononucleosis is not treated with any medication and infected individuals are told to let it run its course with supportive treatment.

It would be advisable to have a test- Throat swab for fungal stain to rule out fungal infection,Mono-spot test to rule out infectious mononucleosis, after consulting Otolaryngologist Doctor.

For the treatment of sore throat-she may take Analgesic and Anti-inflammatory like Ibuprofen.

For the treatment of Bad breath-in addition to warm saline gargles as advised by your doctor, your doctor may do Antiseptic gargles like Betadine gargles.
Also the effective treatment for bad smell is improving your dental hygiene. As part of your daily routine, you should:
floss between your teeth, brush your teeth and gums, clean your tongue.
Drinking plenty of fluids help to prevent your mouth becoming dry.(Saliva is necessary to moisten the mouth, neutralize acids produced by plaque, and wash away dead cells that accumulate on the tongue, gums, and cheeks. If not removed, these cells decompose and can cause bad breath.)
Avoidance of eating strongly flavoured or spicy food.

Hope this answers your question.Take care.
