Suggest Medicines For Diabetes And Bipolar Disorder

I have diabetes type 2 and take 2 metformin @ 1000 every day plus an 80 unit Lantus shot at bedtime. Because I am on Medicare and have an RX plan I haven t found any place, including my turn down letter from Lantus, that will help with the cost. With the max of $2950 (in 2015) before reaching the donut hole, I pay $154.00 for 90 days and my ins. says their cost is $1982.00. This means I can only order once per year as I cannot pay the 52.50% of the cost. I have social security and a part time seasonal job due to health complications. Is there an alternative? Can I take an extra Metformin 1000 instead of Lantus. I pay cash for all my other prescriptions which is putting me in the position of having to eliminate medications such as cholesteron; triglycerides/blood pressure/ and my bi-polar medication. Seems like my government just wants us older people to die off. Is there any help at all available?

Hello and thanks for your question. You need to talk to your doctor and explain this problem to him/her. There are insulins and medications for bipolar disorder that are much less expensive than the lantus. You may need to take two injections per day but you can definitely find medications that are more affordable. For example the cost of a vial of NPH insulin is about $25 and the cost of a vial of lantus is around $130 for the same coverage. Similar savings can be found with many bipolar medications. If your doctor is not aware of these cheaper medications, talk to your pharmacist and take some cheaper suggestions to your doctor at your next visit
