Suggest Diet For Patient With Kidney Stone

I am trying to improve my diet for kidney stones. I have done some extensive reasearch, but I'm not seeing much on beans. Which I do eat alot of, especially black beans. Also, I have seen carrots being allowed, but no mention of them being alright if cooked.

Thank you, Joni

Joni,
I do not see anything in the Nutrition Care Manual that specifies the elimination of beans (legumes). The most important thing to do is keep well hydrated.Drink 3 L of fluid per day including water, juice, etc. Reduce your intake of salt to 1500 mg per day to avoid new stone formation. Assure that you are getting adequate calcium of 1,000 - 1,500 mg per day preferably from food. Carrots are ok cooked, they lose some nutrients so I suggest that you steam, but never boil, vegetables. I hope this answered your question. Have a great day. Kathy Shattler, MS,RDN
