Suggest Cure For Runny Nose And Cough

Person gets runny nose and cough then suddenly same evening rolls off of couch and legs appear to just dangle when trying to help up. She is is able to get up and walk and talk later but is extremely tired. Eventually she doesn't even open eyes while being fed but can still get up and walk a bit. About a week later she cannot sit up and has jerky movements with legs while sleeping. She has several tests done at hospital and is up walking next day with assistance. She is still extremely tired and not opening eyes very much. Days later she is very alert all day then relapses again. She is 85 yrs old with advanced dementia and has taken olanzapine for 2 years. She was very mobile before this. What's the diagnosis?

Geriatrics Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows.
1. Infections in elderly causes cognition deterioration at rapid pace. Its reversible. Once it comes into control, they return almost to there former self.
2. Medications reaction with over the counter medications, evaluation is necessary.
3. With advanced dementia, the symptoms of extreme tiredness, not opening eyes is not unusual. Jerky movements may require evaluation, one off event could be due to restless legs.
4. Dementia has on and off days, so relapses and improvements are common. Continue medications as advised. Diagnosis would be - Severe reversible cognition reduction with advanced dementia.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
