Suggest An Alternative Of Keppra

I just saw a neurologist this week. I currently take Keppra, 1000 mg twice each day. I partly blame Keppra for my depression and slow thinking. I ve had only two seizures since my Temporal Lolectomy surgery, the 2nd being in 2003. I asked to lower my Keppra OR to transfer me to a former medicine such as Dilantin. But he suggested a new form of Keppra. But with no generics available, it would cost over $400 each month. What s the name of the new Keppra?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You are very right in your concern, depression is not uncommon side effect of this drug, and slow thinking , and memory impairment can also be caused by it, so is such cases this can be a logical idea to change the drug .
In-fact drugs used for epilepsy , the aim is to use minimum drug, and drug tolerated best, price should also be concern , and these are few problems that we always keep in mind while selecting a drug for control of seizures. So, if the cost are the side effect is a problem ,I personally do five a trial to another anti epileptic drug. however this should not be stopped abruptly , rather slowly. So you can talk to your physician in this regards, and hopes he would address your concerns.

Hopes I have answered your query,
I would be glad to answer any further question if you have.
I find this answer helpful
