Suffering From Depression, Absolutely Normal After Treatment. Is Depression Hereditary?

my sister in law was suffering from some depression for last four years. she used to break her bangles and tending to scratch her self with broken piece of bangle, bite the people who used to catch hold of her, her looks were almost ghostly etc. initially though the problem was serious now she is absolutely normal after treatment. i think she was affected by that due to her family problem. does her daughter has any chances of inheriting the same from her mother as the girl is to be married now and the same question is raised by the other party now. pls help.

Hello ruparam.sripada
Welcome to HCM
There are chances of depressive disorder to occur in daughter if her mother was depressive disorder patient. The risk is 2-3 times than any other person. Depression runs in families.
But the symptoms you are mentioning are not depressive symptoms as per my opinion. With available information we can think of over possibility in her as most probably Conversion Disorder or previously it used to be called as Hysteria. And in conversion disorder there is almost no heritability. Adjustment Diorder its other possibility and it is also not heritable. Depression comes in third number.
So although depression run in families but the risk can only be judged by getting complete family history
Hope I cleared your doubt.
thanks take care.
