Diabetologist 's  Response
Hi, I had gone through your query and understood your concerns.

The blood sugar levels are high. AS you said metformin has though rare but with the side effect of gastric upset. Or else its very effective. For your blood sugar to get under control, medication is mandatory. Gliclazide is very effective anti-diabetic drug. It doesn't cause wait gain. You can take the medication. Along with medication exercise and diet control also is mandatory.

Hope this guide you.
Wishing you good health.
