Should I Do Curettage To Remove Residue After Abortion?

Hello doctor, I had a medical abortion 4 days a go. one day after abortion i did an ultrasound which showed I had stile a residue of 4 *4.5 cm. my doctor told me that i have to undergo a curettage and proposed me to do it for me at the same day. as i i did not have severe pain and not even heavy bleeding and was afraid of doing a curettage i consulted some friends of mine that are doctors (but not women specialist), they told me i should not rush in doing curettage as it is too early and the residue may go by bleeding in the next few days or during next menstruation . I wanted to ask : 1- when is the best time to do the ultrasound?2- is this residue (4 * 4.5) it too big to remove by itself? 3- how long can I delay surgical abortion?
Many thanks in advance for your answer

Hello,
I have gone through your query and understood the concern. The residual products are of considerably large size and may not get expelled spontaneously. You may wait for a couple of days, but if it does not get expelled on its own, you may bleed profusely. If I were to treat you, I would prefer a surgical evacuation, preferably under ultrasound guidance. Sometimes, another course of medical abortion also may be tried with benefit. Either way, a follow up trans-vaginal sonogram should be performed to ensure complete evacuation. Hope this helps.
