Should Thyronorm Be Continued Long Term Due To Breast Feeding?

Hello doctor, I was prescribed 50 mcg thyronorm during pregnancy with my second baby. After 1.5 months of delivery my TSH was 2.360 with the medication.again after 6 months it was1.879 with medication so I stopped it thinking it has become normal but then I felt quiet lazy. I did a test again after 7.5 months and my TSH rose to 3.355 without medication so I have started the pill again. For how long I need to take the medicines? I am breast feeding my 8 months old baby , hope it's not harmful for her In any ways.please suggest.

Hello there,
Thyronorm has no bad effect on the baby you are breast feeding. Now during pregnancy the ideal TSH levels is 1-3. however it would have helped to know what was your TSH at diagnosis. If it was mildly elevated like 4 or 5 and you were started Thyronorm only for tiding over pregnancy then you need to do a TPO antibody test which is the guide to decide whether you can be off medicines or not. If TPO is positive then it means that you need to be on medicines life long. However if TPO antibodies are negative then you can try to go off the medicines for some more time and see if TSh rises to above 5. If it doesnt then you can be off medicines. However if on stopping medicines and testing after 6 weeks TSH remains between 0.35- 5 then you do not need to take the medicines but check every 3 months for a year to be sure that thyroid functions are normal.
This is how we generally try for our patients who need thyroid replacement only during pregnancy.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
