Should I Take Penicillin VK For Sore Throat?
I had a very bad sore throat, a little over 2 weeks ago, that was so painful I could barely eat for the first two days. I was seen by an internal medicine doctor that prescribed me penicillin vk, but was never told the diagnosis. Now, I have a sore throat again that hurts when I swallow, but I can still manage to eat. It also hurts in my left ear, especially when I swallow. Other than that, no other symptoms.

Hi welcome to HCM....
For streptococcal throat infection and for granular pharyngitis or tonsilitis penicillin can be prescribed ....
Here your ASO titer has to be done to rule out streptococci infection....
If present amoxyclav antibiotic also can be used which is of penicillin group...
Salt water gargles done ...
Drink more water...
Throat swab taken if aso titre normal to rule out influenza infection for which oseltamivir can be used.....
Avoid excess spicy foods....
CBC also done to look for any significant increase or decrease in cell number.
