Should Estrogen And Progesterin Be Taken Lifetime After Taking For Menopause ?

I would like to know what your opinion is about estrogen and progesterin, that I was taking after menopause, my new very young doctor seems to believe that it is not necessary even though in my home town I consulted a endrocronogist and was told to take them for life, it is good for your memory, moods, sleeping etc. This doctor said hormones are only for the time of menopause, what would your opinion be, I am quite alarmed at his lack of knowledge. Please excuse spelling. Thank you AAAA

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

Hormonal therapy after menopause and more so for your entire life is highly discouraged. Several studies pointed to the risk of Heart disease, Stroke, Blood clots and Breast cancer after using these for long that has limited its use just to the control of severe menopausal symptoms and for limited period of time also.

The short term benefits of these hormones cannot justify its continuous use seen the long term effects unless there are other serious and more justified indications. It is clearly a controversial topic but for life is so so concerning.

Hope you find this helpful. Feel free to return to us with more questions if need be. I wish you good health. For more information, please read on www.mayoclinic.com/health/hormone-therapy/WO00046
