Sharp Shooting Pains In The Arm Getting Worse. Not Responding To Anti Inflammatory Medication

I've been having sharp shooting pains down my arm starting from the top of my shoilder around the rotator cuff area. It wakes me up at night not because its to painful bit because of the discomfort. I am a hairdresser and it also shoots pain when I have my arms up cutting the top.of somebodys head. I have seen my doctor who gave me anti inflammatorys and told.me to rest it. I have had four weeks rest n have been back at work for three weeks now. Is getting progressively worse again. Help pls.

Hello,
Thanks for writing in.
From your symptoms, it appears that your rotator cuff and muscles attached to it are at fault.
Please refrain from overusing your shoulder but again with the job profile of a hair dresser you cannot completely do away with it.
I would suggest that you consult an orthopedic surgeon and further get an ultrasound scan of rotator cuff or MRI scan of shoulder. This will reveal any labrum impingement, rotator cuff tendon partial and complete tears.
The surgeon will treat you accordingly. He may also give steroid injections into your shoulder joint to decrease the pain.
