Prescribed Zyprexa For Schizophrenia. Is It Safe To Take It For Long ?

My daughter has schizophrenia and is prescribed zyprexa. The generic Olsnzapine orally disintegrating tablets 20mg made her feel crazy and she had to be put in a hospital last month.. The hospital doctor gave her a prescription for the brand medicine but her medicare insurance rejected it and won't pay. She has some zyprexa zydis tablets left from last year which expired Jan.1, 2013. Is it safe for her to take these and are they still effective? She cannot afford to pay $900 a month for the brand nedicine and plan to contact the insurance co.. Her income is only $1,200 (social security disability check) Thanks for any help. She really needs to take the medicine now or she will soon end up in the hospital again. AAAA

Hi,

Expired drugs neither guarantee safety nor efficacy. It is not advisable to take them.
Discuss the issue of cost with your doctor, there will be alternatives to the expensive brands.

Hope this helps,
Dr Anjana rao.
