Prescribed Lactulose, Severe Bowel Movement, Feeling Chilled, Tired. What To Do?

My mother is 90 yrs old. Family physician prescribed 1 Tblsp lactulose per day. First daily dose was taken 7/20. This evening mom experienced what should be called a "blowout" then another movement that was not quite as severe. It has left her feeling tired, and she mentioned feeling "chilled". Aside from hydrating , should we be doing anything else to be sure mom is okay?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

It seems to be advisable for her to have improved diet. She should increase fiber rich products. Probiotic should be also started. Please monitor her blood pressure and heart rate (if the heart rate will be over 100 and blood pressure low, dehydration can be the reason).

Another thing is to find out why she has constipation. If she is in good condition, colonoscopy should be done to rule out colon cancer.

Hope this will help.
Regards.
