Pregnant, Scan Shows Umbilical Artery Resistance Increasing, Diagnosed With Cholestasis. Any Risk ?

Hello,
I am 30W and 5 days pregnant. Scan at 29W and 2 days showed baby at 30 percentile in weight. The umbilical artery resistance was high at 3.6.
Another scan was conducted at 30W and 2 days. The resistance now was 4.9. I have also been diagnosed with Cholestasis this week and have started medication.
Does Cholestasis effect the umbilical artery resistance? What should be the best course of action if the resistance continues to rise?

OBGYN 's  Response
Hello
Thanks for your query.
Cholestasis does not affect umbilical artery resistance.
Cholestasis itself can cause risks to the baby such as preterm labour, sudden intra uterine death, abruption etc.
Umbilical artery resistance represents blood flow to the uterus, increased resistance could be due to placental problems, maternal conditions like diabetes, hypertension or problems in the baby.
If follow up dopplers show increasing resistance, delivery might be expedited after giving steroids to improve lung functions.
All the best

Radiologist Dr. Indu Kumar's  Response
Hello
Thanks for writing to HCM

Umbilical artery Doppler is useful in high risk pregnancies such as preeclampsia and intrauterine growth retardation.
It should be regularly followed up in your case because it is very useful in detecting fetal compromise.
In your case resistance is increasing and if it progresses in such a manner then at one stage there is no flow or reverse flow in diastolic phase and it is an indication for termination of pregnancy.
So, be in contact with your doctor and have regular follow up.
Cholestasis is common in pregnancy and it shouldn't make you worry.
Wish you and your baby all the best.

Take Care
