Pre-op Chest X-ray Showed Soft Tissue In Paratracheal Region. What Could It Be?

Hi my mom had gotten a pre-op Chest x-ray yesterday and today the doctor said they found a moderate soft tissue paratracheal region. She has to go for a Cat scan now and I was wondering how serious is this and should i be worried. What can it be? She also told me that when she goes to the dentist they never give her the thyroid shield.

Hi,
The paratracheal shadow could be due to a wide range of causes eg. Thyroid, thymus, lymph nodes, small mediastinal mass, etc. Also some times if the xray is not well centralised then you get such shadows. The CAT scan will let us now the details of the shadow. Do not worry and wait for the CAT Scan report
