Hi, Thanks for using HCM.

This looks like osteoarthritis. Most commonly seen at your age group. You continue taking fish oil and glucosamine 1000mg per day. Also curcuma will help you.

Try to postpone knee replacement as far as possible. Only if you can't tolerate pain and in very disable condition you can opt for it. Do mild exercises and reduce stress to the joints. Swimming will be good as there won't be any weight or pressure on the joint.

Get done X ray of knee joins and see for all the damages. There may be reduced space, loose bodies and damaged cartilage. With life style modification we can postpone to damage. There wont be regrow of the cartilage now if damaged.

Hope I answered your question. Consult your doctor for further examination and management. Feel free to ask me if you have any further queries.
Wish you good health. Take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

There are few evolving techniques like "Chondrocyte implantation" at the site of worn out cartilage which seems to regrow the cartilage in that area, but it is still in the experimental stage. May be in the forth coming years it may get established as the procedure of choice for cartilage defects.

Generally, Total knee replacement is reserved for elderly people who are finding it difficult to carry on their activities of daily living because of knee pain and in whom all the conservative measures have failed to provide pain relief.

Use of Glucosamine sulfate will definitely give good relief of pain in mild degree of osteoarthritic knee joints.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
